Brief History of Coal Mining India

Coal mining of India has a very long history.


The history before independence from 1774:


Nearly before 220 years from 1774 the commercial coal mining was started. M/s John Sumner and Heatly of the East India Company in Raniganj coalfield along the western bank of the river Damodar was started the first commercial coal mining of India at 11/08/1774. But the coal production that time was very low due to the lack of demand.

At 1815 the first underground coal mining was started.
In 1853 after the introduction of steam locomotives the coal production rate get increased at an average rate of 1 million tonne per year.

The first Indian entrepreneur in coal mining in India was Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, relative of Rabindranath Tagore. Prince Dwarkantah Tagore was run a company of coal mining which was called Tagore & Co. at 1835.

India was started producing 6.12 meters coal per year until 1900, and 18 meters coal per year until 1920. The production received a sudden increase from the first world war but went through a decine in the early 1930's.
The production level reached a level of 29 meters from 1942 and 30 meters in 1946.

After the independence the commercial coal mining of India feel needs to increase coal production because of more demand. That's why coal mining of India needs to be go through a systematic and scientific development of the coal industry.

The establishment of National Coal Development  Corporation(N.C.D.C):


The National Coal Development Corporation a company of the Indian Government was created at 1956.
The N.C.D.C was the first major step to the planned development of Indian Coal Industry.

History after Independence:


The first major step to coal mining industry of India was development of National Coal Development Corporation (N.C.D.C) at 1956.
India had two Govt Coal company in the 1950's, along with the mines of Singarini Company Limited (S.C.C.L). The Singarini Company Limited was in operation from 1945. The company was under the control of Government of the Andhra Pradesh in 1956.

Formation of Coal India Limited (CIL):


The Coal India Limited was formed in three steps since 1972 to 1973.

At  01-May-1972, Coal industry of India was done nationalization of Coking Coal and formed a Bharat Coking Coal Limited (B.C.C.L).

At 01-May-1973,  nationalization of Non Coking coal have been done and formed Coal Mines Authority Limited (C.M.A.L)

After two years at 01-Nov-1975, Coal India Limited was formed, with 5 Subsidiaries BCCl, CCl, WCL, ECL, CMPDIL.
